Potty Training Tips: Personal experience

Today, I'm going to give you potty training tips based on my personal experience. What potty training methods for toddlers actually work? Well, there is no straight answer to this question because no two kids are the same.

It was a little harder potty training my son but my daughter was a lot easier. I started potty training my son at age 2 however, I gave up after two days because he just won't sit on the potty no matter how hard I tried. He would cry once you ask him to sit on it, even though I bought two different potties that still didn't work for me. I just concluded that he wasn't ready.

Three months later when he just turned 2 years and three months, I had to try again but this time, I made him chose his own potty and he picked this amazing potty that looks exactly like an adult toilet seat. I would take the potty to the bathroom and sit on our own toilet pretending to poop. He would laugh at my facial expression and be happy to mimic me. That was how he started sitting on the potty. It took another week before he was about to do the number 2 in his potty.

The steps I took that worked for me

  • I let him pick his potty
  • I took him to the bathroom every 2 hours
  • He had to go without pants for a couple of days, just a long top.
  • I seat on the toilet to encourage him to do the same
  • This may sound weird but I celebrated and danced whenever he peed or poop so, he was excited to see how happy I was.

On the other hand, I was able to potty train my daughter when she was just 19 months old. I just asked her to sit on a potty and she sat, that was it. Although I tried 3 times before she finally peed, however, within 2 days she was already peeing and pooping in the potty. I was amazed!

What are the signs that your child is ready for potty training?

  • When a wet diaper start making him uncomfortable
  • Not peeing during nap time
  • Staying dry for a couple of hours
  • Telling you that they are about to pop or pee.

Do not potty train your child when your child is already dealing with some changes like

  • Starting a daycare
  • Weaning from breastfeeding or pacifier
  • Having a major family changes

In conclusion, just take your time and enjoy motherhood but most of all be very patient!

So, how did you potty train your child? Let me know in the comment section below
